Sripadarajaru life history

(1404 – 1502)
Sripadarajaru is believed to be the incarnation of Dhruva

Birth & childhood

Sri Sripadaraja was born in Abbur, a village in Chennapatna taluk, to a pious brahmin couple, Sheshagiri and Giriyamma, as Lakshminarayana

Once while in the midst of cattle grazing, he was approached by Sri Swarnavarnathirtha belonging to Sri. Padmanabha Teertha samsthana. Abbur was the seat of Sri Brahmanya Teertharu.Sri Swarnavarnathirtha was on his way to Abbur from  Srirangapattana, and asked young Lakshminarayana, how far Abbur is. Young Lakshminarayana replied, “look at me, see my herds and gaze at the sky and realize the distance”. No wonder then that this young boy who was so clever with words, would compose devotional hymns in kannada and thus lay the foundation for dasa sahitya.

Sri Swarnavara teertharu was impressed with young Lakshminarayana’s intellect and expressed desire to conduct his upanayaa and take him as his student.

After upanayana, Sri Swarnavara teertharu and Lakshminarayana went to Srirangam

Stepped into sanyaasaashrama

In 1411, Lakshminarayana was taken into ascetic life and given the name, Sri Lakshminarayana teertharu.

He was sent to study under Sri Vibhudhendra teertharu of Sri Raghavendra mutt. At this period, Sri Lashminarayana muni, came in contact with Sri Raghunatha theerharu of Sri Uttaradi mutt.

Lakshmi narayana theertharu became sripadarajaru

Sri Svarnavara teertharu was observing chaturmasya at Koppar, and young Sri Lakshminarayana teertharu was learning Sri-Sudha. It so happened that Sri Raghunatha teertharu observed the young yati explain a difficult verse from Sri-Sudha. Sri Raghunatha teertharu, in admiration, said “we are just sripadaru (pontiffs), but you are Sripadaraja” (raja of all pontiffs). From then on, Sri Lakshminarayana teertharu became to be popularly known as Sripadarajaru.

Mahimas of sripadarajaru

It is believed that Sripadaraja used to offer 64 types of dishes as naivedya(offering to Lord)

Shripadaraya or Shripadaraja is considered to be the originator of dAsakUta. That is why his name stands first in the following stotra which is sung at the beginning of any traditional Harikatha discourse
“namah sripAdarAjAya namastE vyAsa yOgine namah purandarAryAya vijayAryAya te namaha”

Sri Sripadaraja composed the songs using ‘ranga vithala’ as his ankita.

King Chaluva Narasimhan of Chandragiri took refuge under Sri Sripadarajaru
to get rid of the dosha due to his wrong deeds. Sri Sripadarajaru saved him through his tapas
sakthi. In gratitude he seated him on his simhasana and conducted kanakabishekha.(On that
occasion Sri Vyasaraja teertharu composed and sang the famous devarunama
“Mahime Saladhe”).

Works by sripadarajaru

  1. Vagvajra, his only work n Sanskrit.
  2. Bhramarageeta, Gopi geeta, Venugeeta

Narasimha theertha
Once Sri Sripada wished to for a holy dip in river ganga, but was unable to make the journey due to his advanced age. It is believed that goddess Ganga appeared in his dream and said that she will be at Narasimha teertha, a holy pond at Mulabagilu and that he can have a holy dip there itself.

Brindhavana pravesha

Sripada rajaru entered the brindavan alive at Sri Narasimha Thirtha near Mulbagal. It was on Jyeshta shuddha chathurdashi.

Kanaka Dasaru Jayanthi:

Kanakadasa Jayanthi celebrates the birth anniversary of Saint and Poet Kanaka Dasa, one of the greatest social reformers of Karnataka and who is equally noted for his musical compositions. It is annually observed on Karthika Krishna Paksha Tritiya tithi

Kanaka dasaru

  • Original name – Thimappa nayaka
  • Parents – Biregowda and Bachchamma
  • Birth place – Baada
  • Period – 1508 to 1606
  • Guru – Sri Vyasarajaru
  • Ankitha – Baadadadi keshava / kaginele adikeshava

Nanu Hodare Hodenu

Kanakadasa’s Master Vyasatirtha once poses a question to him, that who among the scholars present in the convention could attain salvation (Moksha). Every scholar present was asked the question, Kanakadasa firmly answers in the negative. He answers in the negative even when asked about the chances of his own master attaining salvation.  But asked about his own chances he says in the affirmative by saying ನಾನು ಹೋದರೆ ಹೋದೇನು adding to the fury of the clueless scholars. His master who could understand the real wisdom behind Kanakadasa`s affirmation, asks him to elaborate his thoughts.

Kanakadasa expresses a philosophical idea behind his thought. Kanakadasa had made a Pun giving different literal and philosophical meanings. Though it seemed on the surface that Kanakadasa is claiming that he alone may attain salvation, he had in fact put forth a thoughtful message that no matter what is ones scholarly possess one cannot achieve anything until the ego is eliminated.

His Miracles:

On the day of Ekadasi (Eleventh day of lunar fortnight), a day for fasting Vyasarajaru called all his students including Kanaka and said, ‘I know how difficult it is to fight the hunger. I am giving you a banana each, you can eat it provided you find a place where no one sees you.’

The students eagerly took the banana and started searching for secret places. In the evening the guru, Vyasatirtha after Patha (instruction) asked them where and how they ate their bananas. Some said they went to a dark corner, others hid behind a tree or had gone into the woods. When it was Kanaka’s turn, he showed his uneaten banana and said, ‘I am sorry I did not eat my banana’. On inquiring he said, ‘Respected guru, I searched a lot but I could not find a place where no one was present. Where ever I went, God was always present, watching me. You had said I should eat without anybody knowing, I could not do so as God was everywhere. ‘ This incident opened the eyes of the other students. Thus, Kanaka was praised by his guru for having aproksha, the deep and intuitive knowledge of Sri Hari

Once when Sri Vyasarajaru asked all his shishyaas to what is there in his handful (mushti).  No one was able to answer.  Then Kanakadasaru replies “it is vaasudeva saligrama”.  When Vyasarajaru unfolded his hands, there was vasudeva saligrama.  This incident has been explained by Sri Purandaradasaru in his devaranama :Kanakadasana mele daye madalu vyasamuni

Vyasarajara sabhe

Kanakana khindi:

Kanaka dasaru,  worshiper and devotee of Lord Krishna, was not allowed entry into the udupi temple, as the priests would not allow him inside the temple as they considered him to be of inferior birth. It didn’t upset him; instead it made him pray with intense devotion.   At that time, an earthquake happened and a small crack appeared on the wall of the temple.   Through this crack, Kanakadasaru was able to have the darshana of Krishna paramathma.  Vadirajaru having noticed this,  having known of the yogyate of Kanakadasaru, and with due respect to the great daasa, he made that crack enlarged on the wall as a window instead of having it plastered.   Thus that window got the name “Kanakana kindi”.Till today, devotees still worship Lord Krishna by praying through the same window that Kanakadasa was blessed with a view Bagilanu teredu seveyanu kodo hariye

DHANURMAASA PUJA

Dhanurmasa is from the day Soorya enters Dhanur Rasi till he moves to the next Rasi. Puja performed during this month brings ‘more fruitful’.

Early morning (4.30 am to 6.30) a.m. is the appropriate time for Dhanurmasa Puja. Those who perform Puja, Naivedya during this time, is rewarded with ‘Adhrishta Phala’.

‘Usha-h Kaala’ is the time 2-hours before Soorya Udaya. Dhanurmasa is the month intended for getting up at Usha-h Kaala, and performing Snana, Sandhyavandana and Devara Puja. It is also meant for ‘Huggi Naivedya’.

Those who perform ‘Huggi Naivedya’ daily in Dhanurmasa get their prayers fulfilled.

Puja performed early morning when stars are still visible in the sky, is ‘Uttama’. If stars have disappeared, it is ‘Madhyama’. Puja performed after Soorya Udaya, is ‘not Dhanurmasa Puja’. It is just an ordinary Puja.

Smruti muktAvaLi” the reference work and authority for rituals says
“yathaa sankOchya satkarma bhunktElpa dvaadashIdinE |
tathaa praatardhanurmaasE kRutvaa karmaarchayEchCha maam “
meaning that just as one curtails rituals on a saadhana dvaadashi so as to be able to partake the meal within the prescribed time, one should curtail rituals during dhanur maasa so as to finish the puja before sunrise. However, there is one important difference.
During saadhana dvaadashi the emphasis is on completing the puja and the meal on time, whereas here it is only on finishing the puja before sunrise and not the meal.

DHANUR MASA DANAS

  1. Kambali (or) Bedsheet Dana
  2. Shayya Dana for Dampatis for Sarvakshema: 2 Carpets, 2 pillows, 2 bedsheets.
  3. Huggi: Perform Huggi Naivedya before sun rise and give a portion of it as dana.

Huggi Neivedhya:

This dish uses Greengram (Moong daal or hesaru beLe) and rice as the primary ingredients. ShAstras rate the naivedya based on the proportion of Green gram to rice in the mudganna. The naivedya is rated as Supreme if the ratio (of greengram to rice) is 2:1. It is Good if 1:1, medium if 1:2 and low if 1:4 or higher.  It is said that Shachi devi, the wife of Indra, offered such Supreme mudganna mixed with ginger to the Lord and got rid of her troubles.

After completion of Dhanur maasa pooja and Huggi Neivedhya, Chant Sri Lakshmi Dwadasa nama sloka

What are the benifits of doing Pooja at different times?
Mukyaarunodaye pujaa madhyamaa luptataarakaa |
Adhamaa suryasahitaa madhyaahne nishphalaa bhavet|

We have to finish pooja when the stars are still twinkling. Pooja that finishes after the stars have vanished, but before sunrise, is considered as Better, whereas pooja that completed after sunrise is inferior. Puja performed in the afternoon is practically useless. We have to do the naivedya and puja atleast before 96 minutes of sunrise.
