Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is one of the most colorful and widely celebrated festivals in India.
Ganapathi is in the 18th Kakshya alongwith Vishwaksena, Sheshashatastaru, Kubera, and Ashwini Devategalu.
Ganesha is the son of Parvathi – Parameshwara. Vinayaka is the abhimani devata for akaasa (space or sky) – bhootakaasha. He has Mooshika as his vaahana, he has modaka in his hands, We have to worship Ganapathi as the Srihari’s parivara devate. We must never worship him as supreme
Acharya Madhwa in his Maandookopanishat Bhashya has written – Sri Ganesha is the aradhaka of Vishwa Taijasa roopa. Both are are Jaagrat and Svapnavaste niyamaka roopa. – i.e., Vishvambara roopa. It has 19 heads. The Central face is Gajamukha, whereas the other 18 faces are human and other faces. Ganesha was doing the chintana of “Vishvambara roopa” of Srihari. As such, he got the Gajamukha.
vinaya chathurthi is celebrated on bathrapada maasa sukla paksha chathuthi every year
Why we should not see chandra on Ganesh chathurthi?
once Ganapathy was sitting on his chariot rat (mooshika Vahana Ganapathy) after eating heavy food on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi. The rat saw a snake passing nearby and the rat become unconscious on seeing the snake and fell down. Ganesha sitting on the rat fell down on the ground. The sweet balls which Ganesha had in his hand fell on the ground and Ganesha took it and put them again in his belly. Ganesha took the snake which was moving and tied to his belly as a belt. Seeing the mischievous actions of Ganesha, Chandra laughed in the sky. Ganesha felt it as disrespect to him by Chandra, and cursed him that “no one shall see Chandra in future”. With this Chandra repented and came down and did the prarthana to Ganesha for pardon.
Syamantaka upaakayana
It is said that anyone who looks at the moon on the night of the Ganesh Chaturthi will be falsely charged with theft or a similar crime. If someone inadvertently sees the moon on this night, he/she may remedy the situation by listening to (or reciting) the story of the syamantaka jewel.
This story may be found in the Puranas such as the Bhagavata and the Vishnu. Briefly, Satrajit, who secured a jewel syamantaka from Surya, did not part with it even when Krishna the Lord of Dvaraka, asked for it saying it would be safe with Him. Prasena, the brother of Satrajit went out hunting wearing the jewel but was killed by a lion. Jambavan of Ramayana fame killed the lion and gave it to his son to play with. When Prasena did not return, Satrajit falsely accused Krishna of killing Prasena for the sake of the jewel. Krishna, in order to remove the stain on His reputation, set out in search of the jewel and found it in Jambavan’s cave, with his child. Jambavan attacked Krishna thinking Him to be an intruder who had come to take away the jewel. They fought each other for 28 days, when Jambavan, his whole body terribly weakened from the hammering of Krishna’s fists, finally recognized Him as Rama.
Jane tvam sarvabhutanam prana ojah saho balam |
Vishhnum puranapurushham prabhavishhnumadhishvaram ||
I now know You. You are the life in all creatures, virility, grit and strength. You are Vishnu, the Primeval Lord, All-prevailing, the Supreme Lord (of the worlds). (Bhagavata 10.56.26) and,
Setuh kr^itah svayasha ujjvalita cha lanka
Rakshhah shiramsi bhuvi peturishhukshhatani ||
He Who built a bridge (across the ocean) that is a standing monument to His fame, set Lanka ablaze, and with His arrows severed the heads of Rakshasas, which fell to the ground.
As repentance for his having fought Krishna, Jambavan gave Krishna the jewel and also his daughter Jambavati in marriage. Krishna returned to Dvaraka with Jambavati and the jewel, and returned it Satrajit, who in turn repented for his false accusation. He promptly offered to give Krishna the jewel and his daughter Satyabhama in marriage. Krishna accepted Satyabhama as His wife but did not accept the jewel.
Due to the false accusations on krishna, It is believed that Krishna did Ganapathy pooja to solve all false alegations against him
In the event that one is not even able to listen to or read the story, the following mantra may be recited holding some water in the palm of the right hand. Then consume the water.

The above sloka can be recited for solving misunderstandings / negative interpretation with you
Recite the sloka on chathurdashi day if happened to see chandra in the evening

Ganapathy visarjana:
Although the day of Anant Chaturdashi is the most significant day to perform Ganesha Visarjan, many families do it on the 3rd or 5th or 7th day from the day of Ganesha Chaturthi. It is important to note that all these days are in odd numbers. Even the most important day of Ganesha Visarjan, which falls on Anant Chaturdashi day, is the 11th day from the day of Ganesha Chaturthi.
On the visarjana day the statue of Lord Ganesha is immersed into water body, preferably in a river, lake or the sea. Those who could not do in river or lake, can do in home in a bucket

Ninna olumeyindha
This is one of my favorite song and I heard this song for the first time in Mysore Ramachandra Achar kacheri at Salem. This is a heart touching song and Vijayadasaru who wrote this song Thanked sri Hari for everything he got in his life. He is talking of the wealth of knowledge which he received. He says that it is the Lord’s benevolence that has caused him to possess such wealth.

Ekadashi and its importance
Ekadashi is the 11th day of the moon cycle, both from the full moon and from the new moon.
Na Kaashi na Gaya Ganga na rewa cha Gowthami
Na Chaapi KauravamKshethram, thulyambhoopaHaredrinaath.– Padma Puraanam
Padmapuraanam says that sacred rivers like Ganga, Narmada, Godavari etc. and holy places like Kashi, Gaya, Kurushetra etc., cannot equal the merit of Ekaadasi Vratha.
“Vratagallelavu ekadashi vratava hinde”
Whether one following any vrata/anushtana or not that doesnt matter, Definitely one should do fasting on ekadashi
Purandara dasara lyrics says as follows:
“Hari dinadali unda nararige
Kora naraga thappudhendhu sruthi saruthalidhe”
The lines say, one who ate on ekadashi day will definitely will go to Naraka as told by vedas
What is Dinathraya:
Ekaadasi Vratha begins with the sankalpaon the Dasami day, fasting on the Ekaadasi day and parane on Dwaadasi day. Since it is spread over three days it goes by the name Dinathraya or three-day Vratha.
All together for three days, you will be forbidden four meals. Even on Dasami and dvadasi, You are not allowed to eat meals for the dinner
Science behind Ekadashi
Meanwhile according to modern science, it is known that the air pressure on our planet varies to extreme limits on both the new moon (Amavasya) and the full moon (Purnima) day. This is because of the orbital path combination of the sun, moon and earth.
This can be observed by the change in the nature of the tidal waves on the new moon and full moon days. The waves are very high and rough, but from the next day onwards, the waves become calm, an indication that the pressure has also receded.
Now, based on this fact, the significance of Ekadashi fasting can be explained in 2 ways:
1) According to science, it takes about 3-4 days for the food that we eat today to reach our brain. Now, if we eat light/fast on Ekadashi days, that intake will reach the brain correspondingly on the New moon/full moon day.
On both of these days, the earth pressure is at its maximum, thus leading to imbalance in everything, including ones thought process.
So, if the input to the brain is at a minimum, the chances of the brain indulging in any wayward activity due to the high pressure imbalance also becomes minimum.
2) Another explanation for the Ekadashi fasting is that compared to any other day of the moon cycle, the atmospheric pressure is the lowest on the Ekadashi days. Thus, this is the best time to fast and cleanse the bowel system. If we fast on any other day, the high pressure/strain may damage our system. Thus, it is advisable that after fasting on the Ekadashi, on the immediate next day (Dwadashi), we get up early and eat as soon as possible.
As per both the above theories, the fasting practice on the Ekadashi days have a strong scientific base.
Mostly people fear that by fasting one will become weak. Such a fear is not genuine. A day’s fast gives rest to the machinery of stomach and thereby helps it to function better in the future. Not only that the undigested food material gets proper opportunity for its further digestion, but also by fasting the digestion power increases, better assimilation of food takes place helping in more production of blood and other necessary chemicals, and thereby helping better health and better nutritional effects. It is both a good measure for would be stomach troubles and a cure for a number of ailments. It helps better functioning of the liver, pancreas, intestines and kidney etc., thereby reducing the chance of any ailment relating to these organs.
WHY EKAADASI FASTING?
- It is Haridina-meant for spritual activity only.
- Food will not be digested since the moon is not in full glory.
- Shrimad Acharya has prescribed fasting, so it is mandatory to us.
- Its observance reduces all sins to ashes.
- Fasting tones up our health and keeps the body and the mind trim.
Normally 24 (12 x 2) Ekaadasis occur in a calendar year. When in a year there is an Adhikamaasa(According to Vashishta philosophy Adhika Masa comes in 32months, 16days, 3hrs, and 12mins) 2 more are added.

It is said in the Bhagavatha that a person who remembers the story of gajEndra mOksha as soon as one wakes up in the morning, is blessed with hari smaraNe during maraNa kAla.

The king of elephants was held at his feet by a crocodile which was of superior strength in the lake. Taking a lotus, the elephant called out to the Lord as Adi puruSha, lOka nAtha, tIrthashravaH and shravaNa maMgala nAmadhEya.
Having heard his plea, the Lord who is apramEya, with the chakra came on the shoulders of garuDa and killed the crocodile with His chakra and freed the elephant by His hands.
