Who should do this vrata?

This vrata is mainly observed by the married women for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands and they pray for a happy and peaceful married life

This sacred vrata is dedicated to Goddess Gauri and Sati Savitri

Story of Savitri and Satyavan

The story of Savitri and Satyavanis presented in the VanaParva of the epic Mahabharata.

Savitri was born to the king of Madra kingdom, Asvapati as a boon to this king, granted by the sun god Savitr. As she grew up into a fine young lady, her father told her to find her own husband.

She set out on a pilgrimage for this purpose, and came across Satyavan , who was the son of blind Dyumatsena, king of the Salwa Kingdom.

After losing his eye sight, he lived as a forest dweller in exile. Lord Narada did not approve of the choice as Satyavan was destined to die after an year and he told this to Savitri’s father, who also did not approve of the choice.

Since Savitri was determined to marry Satyavan, his father gave in. After her marriage, Savitri lived the life of a hermit and went to live in the forest with her husband and in-laws.

Exactly three days before the death of her husband Satyvan, she observed a rigorous fast and followed her husband into the forest after seeking permission from her father-in-law.

On the day Satyavan was destined to die, while he was cutting wood, he suddenly fell very weak and layed his head on Savitri’s lap and passed away.

Then Lord Yama, the God of death himself came to claim Satyavan’s soul but Savitri refused to allow him to take her husband’s soul. As Yama carried Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed him and when she was told to return back by the God of death, she offered words of wisdom. Lord Yama was impressed by the speech of savitri. He praised her for her choice of words and intelligence and offered to grant her three wishes.

She asked for the return of the eye sight of her father-in-law along with his kingdom. She also asked for hundred sons for her father-in-law, as the second wish and then hundred son for herself, as the third wish. Yama granted all the three wishes and the last wish created a dilemma as it could not materialize without giving back the life of her husband Finally, Lord Yama accepted defeat and returned Satyavan’s soul. This is how Savitri, with her wisdom and dedication brought her husband back to life.

The Importance of Banyan Tree

It is  believed that by performing all the rituals of the puja below this scared tree, all the desires of the devotees are fulfilled

On the purnima, in the month of Jyestha, the idols of Savitri-Satyava nand Yamraj riding a buffalo, made from god or mud, are brought by the devotees and these are then worshipped with the Banyan tree

How to celebrate?

Gangotpatti

The meaning of gangotpatti means the origin of Ganga Devi or incarnation. This festival is observed on the Vaisakha Sukla Saptami. It is said that all the sins are removed by worshipping Goddess Ganga Devi on that day.

We all know that Bhageeratha brought the river Ganga to the Earth from Deva Loka. The river on its way, flooded into the Ashrama of Janhu Maharishi.

He got angry and swallowed the river by doing aachamana. Bhageeratha in great distress, begged Maharishi to released the river.

The kind-hearted, Maharishi, released the river, through his right ear. He thought if he releases the river from his mouth, it would become ‘uchchishta’. . That day is celebrated as  Gangot-patti. from then river Ganga became ‘Janhavi’ — since she became the daughter of Janhu Maharishi.

On this day, Ganga Puja is celebrated in the house.

Perform shodasopachara Pooja to Kalasa along with Ganga thaali

Another significance of bevu bella is related like Our life is made up of Sorrows and happiness. It shows the different facets of life: Sweet and bitter experiences in life.

Panchanga sravana:

It is auspicious to know about the life span of Chaturmukha Brahma Deva and also know the Thithi, Vaara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana everyday

LIFE SPAN OF CHATURMUKHA BRAHMA DEVA

This is a little complex math. But once you understand manvantara, kalpa etc it is easy to understand what is one day in Chathurmukha brahma cycle?

Swasti Sri, Chaturmukha Brahma Deva was born from the Naabhi Kamala of Maha Vishnu and has 100 years of life span.
He has completed the first 50 years. Now the first day of the 51st year is running
Krita Yuga + Treta Yuga + Dwapara Yuga + Kali Yuga = one Maha Yuga
71 Maha Yugas = one Manvantara
14 Manvantaras = one Kalpa(This is the day time for Brahma Deva)
Similarly one night is equal to another 14 Manvantaras (one Kalpa).
So, 28 Manvantaras (two Kalpas) constitue a single day
Like this 360 days =  one year for Brahma Deva
And like that, Life span of Chathurmukha brahma is  years

In the first day morning, in Swetha Varaha Kalpla, 6 Manvantaras are completed. In the 7th (Vai-vas-vatha) Manvantara, 27 Maha Yugas are completed. In the 28th Maha Yuga, Krita, Treta, Dwapara Yugas have goen. In 4 lakhs 32 thousand years of Kali Yuga, 5,000 years are also completed. We are now at the beginning of the first quarter of Kali Yuga (Kali Yuge Prathama Pade – in sanskrit).

  • On Yugadi day, Panchanga Sravana either in the morning or evening.
  • If Panchanga is not available, do pooja to this book and then read out the contents of the first few pages to everyone in the house.
  • Keep the Panchanga in a Peeta. Arisina, Kumkuma to Panchanga.
  • Do Dhyaana of Navagraha Devata, antargata Mukhya Praana, antargata Sri Lakshmi Narasimha, Dhyaana of your Kula Deva Swami, Aavaahana, Mantrakshata, Pushpa Samarpana, Mangalarathi to Panchanga.

Why Panchanga sravana

At the beginning of the year, if we get advance information on the likely events in that whole year, it would be helpful to prepare ourselves to adhere to those austerities. In this way, Panchanga Sravana helps us to get peace and prosperity in life.

Panchanga Sravana is Mangala-kara for everyone. It removes the ill-effects of bad dreams, brings Punya of Ganga Snana, yields the Punya of Go-daana, increase the life span, beget of good, Satwik Children and wealtH

In case, if you are not able to make it up for panchanga sravana in the temple, atleast try to read first few pages of panchanga @ home itself
