Sode/Sonda Vadhirajara Vaibhava

Hoovina kare(Near Kumbhasi)

This is the birth place of Vadiraja Theertharu.

Ramabhatta and Gowri devi , A couple lived near Kumbhasi did not have children for a long time. Once they visited Sri Vagheesa Theetharu of Sodhe Mutt near Kumbhasi and Prayed him to bless them for a child. Vagheesa Theertharu replied they would be blessed with a boy soon and The boy should be handed over to the Matha(To be the next Ascetic) . Parents were not happy on hearing this condition. Swamiji modified the Condition even more as “if Gowri devi gives birth to the boy inside the house, The parents can keep the child, If outside the house, They have to give the Child to the Matha”

About nine months later, one day when the entire family except Gauri were having food, a cow entered the paddy field in front of their house. Immediately Gauri came out of the house and started to chase the cow away.

The cow ran away but Gauri sat down to relax. within few minutes she was in labor and before other members of the house could reach her, Gauri had already delivered a boy.

The baby was named Bhuvaraha and Later become the great Dvaita saint Sri Vadiraja Swamy.

Location:

It is approximately 25 kms away from Udupi.

Sodhe Vadhiraja Mutt

Sodhe/Sonda/Swathi is a small hamlet, Peaceful and non commercialized location in Northern Karnataka.

It is approximately 20 kms from Sirsi town

Sonde /Sode is accessible by well maintained roads. There are Buses plying from Bangalore,Pune etc.

Nearest Railway stations: Hubli. From Hubli, It takes approximately 2 hrs to reach sodhe

Sodhe Trivikrama Temple:

The ruler of Swadi  requested Sri Vadiraja Theertharu to construct a temple as there existed no Vishnu temple at that place. Sri Vadiraja Swamy asked the king to start construction of a temple. When people questioned Swamiji on the idol, he told them that the idol of Sri Trivikrama would come to Sode from Uttara Badari (in the Himalayas). He told them that the idol is being worshipped by Sri Madhvacharya and the same was seen by him when he visited him and Sri Vyasa in Badari.

It is believed that the idol was brought to Sode by Sri Bhutaraja. Bhutaraja started bringing the entire Garbha Gudi (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple from Badari.

The structure is in the form of a stone chariot. On the way, he is supposed to have been stopped by a demon. Sri Bhutaraja used one of the wheels of the stone chariot to destroy the demon and made it on time to Sode. Even today, one can find that the stone chariot structure housing the idol in the temple has just three wheels. Devotees visiting Sode must definitely visit this temple and observe the unique stone chariot and the three wheels. I believe there is just one other temple (somewhere in Tamil Nadu) where the idol is placed in a chariot like structure.

Dhavala Gange:

It is the sacred tank in the Sodhe kshethra and those who perform seva, Should take bath in Dhavala gange before commencing the seva

It is believed that this tank has all the holy rivers within it

Jackfruit tree:

There is a big jackfruit tree in Sode, under which Sri Vadiraja Tirtha used to teach his disciples. Once, a severe bolt of lightning struck this tree. Sri Vadiraja Theertha, the Bhâvi Samira, gave life to this tree. This tree is still alive in Swadi; the Matha uses its fruit for Sri Hayagriva naivedya

Sodhe Vadhirajara Brindhavana:

Sri Vadiraja ordered / requested the king to construct a big Brindava enough for Him to sit and install a idol of Sri Veda Vyasa just opposite to the Brindavana. He also requested for 4 small Brindavana to be surrounded by the Brindava for Him. The king constructed the Brindavanas as  requested by Sri Vadiraja.

People who witnessed brindavana pravesha of Sri vadirajaru was speechless and sad.  When they saw the sky Sri Vadiraja was travelling in a pushpaka Vimana, They bowed and prayed to Him. He threw His Golden Padukas and His Saffron Vastra below which is still there in the mutt

The entire Brindavanas over and above the dashavatara sannidhis have Sri Chaturmukha Brahma, Sri Maheshvara, Sri Vishnu as well as Sri Mukhya Prana presence.

The main Brindavana has Sri Vadiraja, Sri Hayagreeva and Sri Bho Varaha sannidhi’s making this one of the most and sacred place for gaining Sri Hari Bhakti and getting peace and ridding oneself of unknown and known diseases and other problems in life

Tapovana near Sode:

This place is about 5 kms from the Matha and is on the banks of the river Shalmali.

It was there that Sri Vadiraja theertharu used to meditate upon Lord Hayagriva with a plate of “Hayagriva Maddi”, a special sweet dish made by him, on his head.

Hulekal Vyasaraja Mutt:

After completing 12 years of Pooja at Tiupathi by Vyasarajaru, It was very hard for Vyasarjaru to leave the place. Lord Venkatesha Blessed him saying “Where ever you install my idol made out of Vishwakarma, I will remain there always”

Ishtartha siddhi seva at Sonda Vadiraja Math

Men should wear kacche panche and women should be in saree /girls in langa blouse compulsory throughout the seva.

Procedure:

1. Take a coconut ( preferably small in size , so that you can tie around your waist and it doesn’t touch the ground when you do namaskara ) , a panche to tie the coconut and two pots to pour water while you bathe in Dhavala Ganaga.

2. Buy seva ticket in the seva office , they will provide you a paper which has the procedure and also a number sheet till 108 to keep track of your pradashinas.

3. On the first day of seva , you will have to do sankalpa – which usually is done in the morning.

You have to take head bath in dhavalA ganga and do dhvalA ganaga puja and tulsi puja(women) and do the sankalpa in wet clothes in the temple.

The priest will take your coconut to keep it in front of vrindavana and will give it to you back. Once sankalpa is done , you will start your seva

1. Tie the coconut in the panche and tie it around your waist with the coconut on the right side.

Take head bath again , if you cant bath again, you will have to use two pots each in one hand and pour water on head 7 times .

Women have to apply haldi kumkum after this.

Then do namaskar to prana devaru .

Start pradaskina: starting from prana devru , tulsi devi, gopal krishna, santhana gopal krishna, naga katte, vadirajaru, papanashini, bhutarajaru , Rudra devaru, Veena paani prana devaru

The coconut should not touch ground throughout the seva.

2. Now you will have to again bathe in dhaval ganga ( pour water 7 times with pots or immerse in water ) , again apply kumkum haldi (women)and start pradakshina.
The process should be repeated till u complete 7 pradakshinas of the outside premises

3. After 7 pradakshinas , you should again bathe in dhavala ganaga and go to Rama Trivikrama temple and put 7 pradakshinas there .

Remember that every pradakshina should be followed by a namaskara

4. Then come back and tie the coconut in a safe place so that u can identify it the next day. Usually it is tied in the prana devaru temple premises.

5. Change your wet clothes and wear washed dry clothes and head towards moola vrindavana , inside temple and complete your 108 pradakshinas inside.

Here also you have to bow down 4 times once in each direction while doing pradakshina.

6. In case you are not able to complete 108 before lunch , you will have to again take head bath and wear new set of washed dry clothes and start again after a short break after your lunch.

7. So in total in a day you will be doing 7 + 108 pradakshinas = 115 pradakshinas

8. The seva should be done in 3 or 5 or 7 days .

9. If you do with full complete dedication and bhakthi , God will surely give you a sign of your wish coming true before you leave Sonda.

10. Keep chanting ” Vadiraja Pahimam, Bhutaraja Rakshamam” during pradakshinas.
11. after the seva completion , Do the samarpana.

On the 4th , 6th or 8th day the Krishnarpana need to be done.

For this you take head bath in dhavala Ganga , wear washed dry clothes and untie your coconut( which you had tied last day) from the prana devaru temple premises and take it to  vrindavan.

12. After the Krishnarpana , you take the coconnt to your home and prepare sweet from it and distribute and eat.

Remember : you have to be in sonda only throuout your seva completion ( 3/5/7 days and nights ) and do not touch the coconut tied when you are not in wet clothes. ( except for last day- 4th/6th/8th day).

Bhootarajaru

Who is Bhootaraja?

  • Bhootaraja is considered one of the best among the servants of Vaadirajaru.
  • He is considered to be an incarnation of Patrataapa Rudra
  • Rudras are a group of devatas and the 11th rudra is mahadeva shiva. Patrataapa Rudra is 10th Rudra and the Mahadeva Rudra of next Kalpa.

1. Tapodhana

There was a brahmana called Tapodhana during Treta Yuga and was an incarnation of Patrataapa rudra.

After Raavana vadha , when Shri Rama enquired all brahmins  in his court at Ayodhya as how to get rid of sin of killing a brahmana, Tapodhana mocked at other brahmins saying that they do not have power to wash away sin of brahmahatya and he has enough tapashakti to do it.

Lord Shri Rama said that Mocking brahmanas in this way would result in next birth being a brahma Raakshasa.

Though lord did not curse and said this with a smile , the words and sankalpa or Paramaata never fail and Tapodhana realised this. He fell at the feet of Shri Rama and asked for kshama.

Shri Rama assured him that he will be relieved from his brahma raaksha roopa by service to the devata who will become Vayu in next kalpa and he is none other than laatavya.

As Tapodhana regretted for his sin , his Karma reduced and he took 2 births further to clear his brahma raakshasatva.

2. Somadatta

During the times of Mahabharata , there used to be Bahlika who was incarnation of Prahlada. He had a  son called Somadatta, who was incarnation of Patrataapa Rudra.

His bravery is described many times in Mahabharata. He had 2 sons Bhuri and Sala. They were incarnations of the rudras , Ajaikapad and Virupaaksha respectively.

He desired of a son who is of tremendous strength and unconquerable in war.He did severe penance and pleased Mahadeva Shiva, who blessed him with a son who was incarnation of Ahirbhudni(9th Rudra). He is none other than the famous warrior Bhurishravas.

He was a skilled warrior and had mastery of vaious weapons just like his father.

Somadatta had advised Dhritharaastra not to invite pandavaas for the game of dice and was also against war with them.

Just like his father Baahlika maharaja, he sided kauravas owing to his cousin Bheeshma being on their side. He fought in the battle and was slain by Saatyaki.

3. Narayana Sharma Or Bhootaraja (Narayana Bhoota)

Somadatta took birth as a brahmana called Narayana Sharma and was a great pandit. He used to be a disciple of Sri Vaadirajaru and was close to him.

Once Vyasarajaru visited matha of Vaadirajaru, who was about to commence his pooja. It was dwadashi. Vyasarajaru had said that without Rajaru coming and sitting by his side , he wont commence his dwaadashi Bhojana.

Not liking the thought of keeping the aakasmika atithi wait for bhojana, Vaadirajaru arrived where he was sitting and sat along with him for Bhojana. After Bhojana , Raajaru asked all his students and disciples to stay at matha and not to follow him.

He went near shalmali river, brought a big leaf , sat on a rock and brought out all the food he ate sometime back as raw and hot as it was when it was served.Nothing had digested in his stomach.He did this with his yoga shakti.

One student had followed him and was observing all this by climbing a tall tree. He was none other than Narayana sharma.

VadiRajaru did snana and finished his pooja and ate the hot bhojana again. While returning to matha, Narayana sharma came across him and said he had viewed everything. Rajaru cursed him to become a Brahma raakshasa.

Upon asking for forgivence, he said ” Roam in the forests and ask — Aa Ka Ma Vai .. Ko Na Snathaha ? and whenever someone answers this question he will get relieved from his brahmaraakshasatva.

He roamed in forests near Badarikaashrama. No one would walk through the forest where he used to reside as he used to kill and eat people who used to bypass that forest

When this was revealed to Vadirajaru, who took pity on his student visited that forest and was stopped by Narayanabhoota who asked him the same question.

Rajaru said ” Randa Putra , tvam na snataha “

Meaning: The one who is son of a prostitute and/or a brahma raakshasa like you would not bath in months of Aa(ashwayuja) , Ka(Karteeka) , Ma(Maagha) , Vai(Vaishaaka)

The vipra lost his Brahmaraakshasatva and gained his original form of Patrataapa rudra. He was out of the curse he gained.

His body rose like the emerging red sun and was blazing like Fire. he had round big eyes and a terrible stature. He made saashtaanga namaskara to the divine avatara of Shri Laatavya, ie Shri Vaadirajaru and desired to serve him to the eternal times.

Raajaru blessed him saying he will be Bhaavi Rudra and will be kshetra paalaka at Sodhe and would be famous as Bhootaraaja. From then on Bhootarajaru would be in invisible form and serve his Guru ie Vaadirajaru.

Bhootarajaru brought Trivikrama Moorthy from Badri

Once when Vadirajaru ordered him to bring the Utsava moorti of Lord Trivikrama at Badarikaashrama which gets pooja regularly by none other than Brahma himself, Bhootaraja rushed to the spot and started bring the moorti along with its ratha in Aakaasha maarga. He encountered a Daitya in the skies who tried to stop him.

Bhootaraja picked up a wheel and threw at the daitya who died instantaneously. He was in a hurry as he had to bring the Trivikrama vigraha within the muhurta specified by his Guru. When he landed in Sodhe, VadiRajaru installed Lord Trivikrama We can still see this in Trivikrama temple at sodhe where the lord who is inside a ratha with only 3 wheels.

Bhootaraja temple at Sodhe:

There is a separate shrine for Bhootarajaru in Sode. Coconut offering is so special and It is a belief one who does coconut offering, all their needs are  fulfilled

Everyday in the evening, bhootaraja Bali pooja is conducted

There is a special entrance in the saravora at Sodhe for Bhootarajaru. It is not open for other devotees.
