Bheesmashtami

Bheeshma Ashtami, or Bhismashtami, is observed on the  magha maasa Shukla Paksha Ashtami

It is believed that Bheesmacharya soul departed on this day.

Bheeshma Tarpana:- It is our Dharma to offer Tarpana for Bheeshmacharya on every year Maagha-maasa Shukla-paksha Ashtami.

Tarpana has to be given even by those who have father.  If father is alive,tarpana should be offered with rice and water. Janivara in Savya. Others offer with Tila and Janivara in Apasavya.

Bheeshma Tarpana is not like Pitru Tarpana and it is just  Arghya, That is: the Tila-water flows down through our four fingers (not through the thumb). Hence there is no Palahara restriction at night.

Arghya:

ವಸೂನಾಮಾವತಾರಾಯ ಶಂತನೋರಾತ್ಮಜಾಯ ಚ ।
ಅರ್ಘ್ಯ೦ ದದಾಯ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ಆಬಾಲ್ಯ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೇ ।।

vasUnAmAvatArAya SantanOrAtmajAya ca |
arGyam dadAya BIShmAya AbAlya brahmacAriNE ||

Tarpana:

ವೈಯಾಘ್ರಪಾದ ಗೋತ್ರಾಯ ಸಾಂಕೃತ್ಯ ಪ್ರವರಾಯ ಚ ।
ಗಂಗಾ ಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ಆಜನ್ಮ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೇ ।।

ಅಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಜಲಂ ದದ್ಮಿ  ನಮೋ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ವರ್ಮಣೇ ।
ಭೀಷ್ಮ: ಶಾಂತನೋ ವೀರಃ ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಜಿತೇಂದ್ರಿಯಃ ।
ಆಭಿರದ್ಭಿರವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಪುತ್ರಪೌತ್ರೋಚಿತಾಂ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ ।।

ಮಾಘೇ ಮಾಸೇ ಸೀತಾಷ್ಟಮ್ಯಾ೦ ಸತಿಲಂ ಭೀಷ್ಮ ತರ್ಪಣಮ್ ।
ಜೀವತ್ಪಿತಾಪಿ ಕುರ್ವೀತ ತರ್ಪಣಂ ಯಮ ಭೀಷ್ಮಯೋ: ।।

vaiyAGrapAda gOtrAya sAnkRutya pravarAya ca |
gangA putrAya BIShmAya Ajanma brahmacAriNE ||

aputrAya jalaM dadmi namO BIShmAya varmaNE |
BIShma: SAntanO vIraH satyavAdI jitEndriyaH |
ABiradBiravApnOti putrapautrOcitAM kriyAm ||

mAGE mAsE sItAShTamyAm satilaM BIShma tarpaNam |
jIvatpitApi kurvIta tarpaNaM yama BIShmayO: ||
